Principal’s Message – 9/27/10

Date: September 26, 2010 Author: admin Categories: Principals Message

Hello BA families.

Elementary Music is back at BA! After losing the program due to budget-driven cuts in
the spring last year, the school board recently approved funding to bring music
instruction back for our students. Thanks are in large part due to all of you for your
outstanding support of the SCEF fundraising efforts last year: thank you!

At Brittan Acres we are preparing to implement a schedule that will include four music
instructors “swarming” our campus to teach in four classrooms simultaneously, on
Thursdays, between 11:20-2:20. All K – 4th grade classrooms will participate.

The program, Music For Learning, is an off-shoot of Music For Minors. It will provide
the four trained music instructors to teach comprehensive, sequential, and standards-
based music education in 30-minute sessions. The instructors will provide an interactive
program using practices developed by Zoltan Kodály. The Kodály method emphasizes
performance-based learning via multi-cultural folk songs, rhymes, dances and singing
games, jazz, and classical music. Students experience and explore music through rhythm,
singing, listening, performing, and hands-on activities, and they are introduced to music
theory. They learn to play Orff melody instruments. By playing together, children
develop cooperation, become sensitive listeners and considerate participants, and
experience enhanced physical coordination through movement. Basic music theory and
exploration of the elements of music are embedded in the skills-based approach. The
lesson plans will be coordinated to provide a common repertoire of songs and activities
throughout our school.

I hope the song and dance makes its way into your homes to enhance and enrich your
family time as wonderfully as it will our school time here at BA!

Best,
John Triska
