Hello BA families. Welcome back! I hope you found spring recess both refreshing and relaxing.

STAR Testing This Week and Next for 2nd – 4th Grades
For all our 2nd – 4th grade students, annual Standardized Testing and Reporting (STAR) with the California Standards Test (CST) begins this week. Because the state’s testing window is based on days in school, our district, like many others, must give these assessments after our break. So we are warming up Monday and Tuesday, and will wait until mid-week to start in earnest.

•    2nd and 3rd Grades
Wednesday – Friday before their morning recess, 2nd and 3rd graders will take the three sections of the English Language Arts test. Next week on Tuesday – Thursday they will take the three Math sections.

•    4th Grades
4th graders already took the CST for writing back in March, so they have only 4 sections left. Thursday and Friday between recess and lunch they will take the two remaining English Language Arts sections, and next week on Tuesday and Thursday they will take the two Math sections.

If you are curious about the format and questions of the testing, you can find content area questions for all the tests on the California Department of Education’s STAR website.

Please, as always, help your children do their best at school with routines like regular bed times and healthy eating—there is nothing like a good night’s sleep and a nutritious breakfast to get our minds and bodies running at their peak. And please send along a nutritious snack for recess!

BA Staff Appreciation Week was wonderful. Monday morning, like in a scene from a forgotten time, waves of smiling children walked past me bearing flowers for their teachers. At dawn all week, stealthy PTA parents left delectable, motivating treats in our staff room. On Wednesday we were hosted to a beautiful luncheon at La Tosca Restaurant, served in style by our amazing PTA. I know I speak for all of us here at BA when I tell you sincerely: we very much appreciate YOU!

Best wishes,
John Triska
