Capes, Anyone?

You may have noticed the San Carlos Educational Foundation (SCEF) mascot sporting a superhero cape. This year’s fundraising theme is BE A HERO! If you’ve been following the news, you know it will take heroic efforts on all of our parts to overcome the fiscal challenges facing our schools at this time.

What’s in a Hero?

I had the chance to don a superhero cape myself April 13 when I came to school dressed as Superman. To be honest, it was humbling to stand costumed in that superhero outfit. It’s been ages since I even naively felt more powerful than a speeding locomotive, or had functioning knees capable of leaping a park bench—let alone tall buildings–in a single bound. But gradually, as student after student greeted me as Superman, I began to comprehend my powers. I set out to teach a lesson about heroism.

As Superman, I asked the children to realize their inherent abilities to be heroes. Bulging muscles, blue tights, and dashing capes are not required. A person needs only to do the right thing. When children take the initiative to feed pets, read to younger siblings, assist parents with a chore, or lift a fallen friend, in those moments they are heroes. It’s as simple as that. In our lifetimes, opportunities to act heroically are endless.

Join Us

This spring, we have the opportunity to be heroes for our children by contributing to SCEF. There are 15 days left to meet our challenge. That’s 15 days to join and be part of the solution; to know you have done the right thing for your children’s future and the well being of our community. We can’t take the excellent, well-rounded education of our San Carlos Schools for granted. Now is the time to stand and be counted.

Any amount will help. What’s important is that you give. Unleash your powers!

Appreciatively,

John Triska
