Principal’s Message

Date: October 16, 2011 Author: admin Categories: Principals Message

Hello BA community.

First off, an enormous THANK YOU to Walk-a-Jog leads Lisa Nakahara and Kim Kelly, and all of you who volunteered to run booths, supervise activities, and bring your families to celebrate our amazing event yesterday! Every year I’m struck by the wonderful participation of our Brittan Acres community, and this year was no exception. I feel fortunate to be part of this involved, extended BA family.

Crossing Guards, New Safety Rules
Thanks to the leadership of Beth Robertson and Paula Ebejer-Moffitt, BA now has a volunteer A.M. Crossing Guards program in place at the corner of Cordilleras and Belle! We need more volunteers to continue and to extend the program; if you can participate even one or two mornings a month, please contact Beth at bethr1997@comcast.net.

To ensure a safe commute to school in the mornings, we are asking everyone follow these new Safety Rules:

  1. Drivers: Please watch for the hand held stop signs and cooperate by waiting until the Crossing Guards are all the way back on the sidewalk before proceeding. (Fair warning: the police are enforcing this law by ticketing violations.)
  2. Walkers, riders, scooters, skaters: Wait at the cones until you are motioned to cross by the crossing guard. “For Safe Traffic Supreme, Cross As A Team!” (Thanks wordsmith Joe Stampleman!)
  3. Bikers, scooters, skaters: Walk your wheels. In the crosswalks and sidewalks, only walking is permitted from the corners of Belle/Cordilleras and Belle/Tamarack.

***Helmets, please! Parents, please require your own children with wheels to wear helmets. (The best model is if you wear them as well!)

State-Wide, District-Wide Earthquake Emergency Drill Thursday, 10/20 at 10:20
BA will be participating in “The Great California ShakeOut” emergency preparedness event Thursday. At BA we have made great strides in the last three years preparing for a big quake that scientists tell us is a matter of “when,” not “if.” I’m sure you will hear about this from your children Thursday evening, but for now, information about preparing at school, at home, and in your own workplaces can be found at http://www.shakeout.org/

School Site Council Meeting Thursday, 10/20 at 3:00
Like all our BA School Site Council meetings, our October meeting is open to the public in the school office. Our draft 9/22 Minutes and 10/20 Agenda are available for viewing online at our BA website.

PTA Noontime Support Volunteer Training: Friday, 10/21 at 11:00
I will conduct a third training for parents who would like to volunteer at noon to support students at lunch and lunch recess. You need not participate on a steady schedule. Please let us know you will attend with an email to coordinator Adrienne Crusick at adriennecru@yahoo.com, thank you!
