Principal’s Message 6/1/14

Date: June 3, 2014 Author: admin Categories: News, Principals Message

Hello BA families.

As we creep to summer break, I need to let you know about some staff transitions here at Brittan Acres.

After 13 years at BA, and a long and illustrious career in teaching, Mary Kirby is retiring. Ms. Kirby first began teaching in 1969, and in her career taught almost every grade level K-12. While here at Brittan Acres, Mary earned a reputation for her effective teaching style, individualized approach, and determination that all her students succeed. Last Wednesday at her own “Open House” (having missed BA’s in order to celebrate her son’s university graduation), many of Ms. Kirby’s prior students and families turned out to appreciate her and share fond memories. The School Board will formally recognize Mary at their June 12 meeting at the District Office at 7:00, and you are invited to attend and be part of that.

Karin Bloom is transitioning to a new position as a school counselor at Encinal School in Menlo Park. Ms. Bloom’s extraordinary passion for supporting students, and deep professional knowledge will be missed at Brittan Acres. We will interview for a new school counselor in June, and Karin will work with the new counselor to make this transition as smooth as possible. Meanwhile, she is planning a special lunchtime check-in on Thursday, June 5, for students who participated in Friendship Group sessions that would like to visit and say goodbye. I know you will join me in wishing her all the best, as she transitions into her new job in Menlo Park.

Nicole Billings, on maternity leave since Presidents Week, relocated to Southern California to be near her children’s grandparents, and so resigned from her position at Brittan Acres. She has already found a new teaching position in that area, and will begin in her new classroom in the fall. She will be missed here at BA, but we are happy she is surrounded by family in this next phase of her life.

Susan Mandel and Janice Moyer, longtime beloved BA teachers, are relocating just around the corner to Arundel School, where they will fill open positions to support the success of San Carlos children in our neighboring attendance area. While all of us will miss their teamwork and unique contributions here at BA, we wish them great success in their new setting, and know we will be in touch through our work together in the San Carlos community.

All change requires adjustment. The staff and I understand that our colleagues in transition are eager for the new challenges ahead of them. Here at Brittan Acres, we look forward to meeting the new teachers that will take the reins from those departing, and work with us as we evolve into the Brittan Acres of our future.

Stay tuned for introductions in the fall!

Best wishes,

John Triska
