October Lifeskill: MINDSET

Date: September 25, 2014 Author: admin Categories: Friendship Counseling, School News

Our Life Skills Lesson for the month of October is MINDSET.

I am so excited to get back into classrooms to present another life skills lesson to our students, but what exactly is mindset?

* Children with a growth mindset know that intelligence and abilities are not fixed and can be developed.

* Our brain is a muscle that can be exercised and strengthened.

* A growth mindset can help children desire to learn, and embrace new and difficult challenges.

* How we praise children can make an impact on their performance and success.

* Mistakes are a normal part of learning and can even be helpful.

* The next time you praise your child, stop and think about how to use that opportunity to build a growth mindset and praise his or her effort instead of accomplishments.

For help with knowing how to create a growth mindset in your child, here is a wonderful opportunity to hear Stanford University’s Dr. Carol Dweck speak. Dr. Dweck is one of the world’s leading researchers in the field of motivation and growth mindsets. She will be speaking at Sequoia High School on Thursday, October 16 at 5:30:http://www.gsb.stanford.edu/exed/rwc/speakers.html

* I will be using the book Your Fantastic Elastic Brain by JoAnn Deak in grades 1, 2, 3 and 4.

* I will be using Feel Confident by Cheri Meiners with our Kindergartens.

Here is a link to see what Your Fantastic Elastic Brain is all about.
