On Surviving Storms, and Mornings After

Raking drains on the upper playground Thursday, in the middle of the deluge, I heard a great crash in the upper portion of the playground near Tamarack. Friday morning, this is what I found:
Interestingly, it did not appear to be wind that felled this grand oak, but instead, it’s own weight that overcame the grip of soil, due to the unusual saturation of the ground.
It reminded me of the value of deep roots, when the conditions of our lives become stormy. There will always be recessions, political crises, epidemics, and community and family emergencies that threaten our well-being. In times like those, our deeper connections to each other, and our commitment to learning, to mutual respect, and to responsible stewardship of our resources and our planet—these are the roots that will sustain us as we grow as a community.
I wish all of you a peaceful and enjoyable winter break, and look forward to our work together in the New Year.
