Hello Brittan Acres families.

Last spring our 3rd and 4th graders took the Smarter Balanced Assessment, the new, online and adaptive statewide test given to 3rd – 8th graders that aims to measure students’ progress learning Common Core Standards for Mathematics and English Language Arts. This week, the individual scores are being mailed home to families.

These assessments were very different from former statewide assessments in a number of ways. For starters, the assessments were taken on Chromebooks or Macs. They included reading and note taking from variety of sources on split screens, and students accessed tools from pull down menus to select choices and write short answers and longer essays. A biggest difference was the adaptive nature of the assessment– that enabled a more individuated test experience and score for each student.

Please join me for a presentation and conversation about these assessments to learn more specifically how to interpret your own students’ results (parents of 4th graders), and to better understand how we use this assessment to inform the ways we support the progress of our students.

Best wishes,

John Triska
