Principal’s Message 1/11/2016

Date: January 11, 2016 Author: Michelle Marchena Curtis Categories: Featured, Principals Message

Hello BA families.

It’s essential we strive for balance and mental health as we support our children’s success in school and at home.

In the Sunday, January 3 issue of the New York Times, author Vicki Abeles documented the many ways that stress and anxiety have reached “unprecedented” and “alarming” levels among children throughout the United States. Her article, “Is the Drive for Success Making Our Children Sick?” features recent studies about Bay Area high schoolers suffering from moderate to severe depression and anxiety.

Fortunately, San Carlos schools are on the right track.

Research shows the preventative power of Social Emotional Learning (SEL) curricula, such as our Second Step program. Evidence also supports project based learning, and multiple opportunities for physical activity before, during, and after school– in place in our schools and community. Our parents are aware of the trends, and want to learn more to quell this epidemic of stress.

Tuesday, January 12 at 7:30pm, Heather School’s PTA is hosting a district-wide book discussion to examine the research around homework, playtime, caring environments, and sleep from Challenge Success’s Overloaded & Underprepared- Strategies for Stronger Schools and Healthy, Successful Kids.

It’s not important to have read the book first– feel free to come learn, and share your own strategies for reducing stress in your family in 2016.

Best wishes,

John Triska
