The Counseling Program is a comprehensive early intervention and prevention school counseling program designed to meet the needs of the entire Brittan Acres School community. This is achieved by providing preventative social/emotional learning lessons taught weekly in classrooms, early identification, intervention, and referral services for the students, their families, and the staff in order to help children succeed in the school environment.
If children are taught problem-solving skills and learn to communicate and socialize effectively, resolve conflicts peacefully, and develop emotional well-being, they will be more likely to engage in school and experience academic and social success.
The Counseling Program supports teachers and families by offering options for addressing students’ needs and by participating on the student support team.
Interventions are evidence-based and aligned with the latest research.
Services offered through the Counseling Program
- Student Study Team member – Attend SSTs to support students’ social and emotional development and need for behavioral change.
- Classroom Second Step lessons – Weekly social and emotional learning lessons are taught to each classroom using the Second Step Curriculum.
- Conflict Management Lessons – At the beginning of the school year lessons are taught with the premise that every child is capable of becoming a peacemaker. The program is called Kelso the Frog. This program offers nine options students can choose from to resolve minor conflicts on their own. Students will be able to determine the difference between minor problems they can handle and serious problems that require an adult’s help.
- Small Groups – The purpose of each group is to provide a focused, positive, and supportive environment in which specific needs are taught such as: Friendship Skills, Self Esteem/Flexible Thinking Skills, Anxiety Support, Managing Strong Feelings, Changing Families, New Students, and Bereavement. Groups are between 4-6 children and meet once weekly for 30 minutes over an 8 – 10 week session.
- Changing families groups – The changing families groups are for students who are adapting to a change in their family – separation, divorce, or a blended family situation. The children meet once weekly and have the opportunity to share their thoughts and feelings with other children who have had similar experiences. They learn effective ways of managing the changes and stress they are experiencing.
- Resource and Referral – When a family or a staff member is in need of services beyond those available at the school, they are provided with local resources and referrals as appropriate. I can help connect families to resources that are within their financial means and are appropriate to their goals.
- Crisis Intervention – Immediate crisis response is provided for students, families, and school personnel as the need arises. Referrals to community resources will be made when necessary.
- Individual and Family Counseling – Some students are seen individually between 1 – 6 counseling sessions. Parents are always involved throughout this process.
